Free to be...

I'm once again effectively unemployed. It seems that every time I move, my boss of four years ends up having to downsize us. So it goes.

It's interesting, last year when we moved from our relatively cheap apartment in Vegas (just to clarify- most people like to call it LAS Vegas but I don't feel like taking time to type LAS- so Vegas it is) to our McMansion (just north west of Summerlin), we were downsized.

Now we've moved from there to our cozy little apartment by the beach and we've been downsized to the tune of no more work until October. That’s not really being downsized so much as God telling me to get a different job as far I can tell.

Which is fine I believe. I’ve spent the last four years doing work I’m NOT particularly proud of or artistically satisfied with. In the beginning the money was good so I could use that a way to justify my keeping the job. Now the money has gone from good, to lousy, to non-existent.

So really what am I doing? Taking the low road I think. I’m ready to move on already.
So long Vegas (see again no LAS again because I’m crazy like that).

Of course if anyone knows of high-paying-live-by-the-beach gigs let me know.

Saving the NET

"-it was designed as an end-to-end system, where all the power to create, distribute and consume are located at the ends of the system and not in the middle."

Interesting reading.

Disneyland

We spent the entire day at Disneyland yesterday. I'll have pictures later...

I remember that when I was young, probably four or five, my grandparents went to Disneyland. I recall that I was pretty annoyed that they went and we ended up at Paul Bunyan Land that summer.

Do the math and imagine my angst. The Haunted Mansion was really fun and everything I hoped it would be.

San Diego Comic Con

I haven't been down to the San Diego Comic Con in about 7 years. Logan and I went yesterday with cousin Joe who took these pictures.

I met George Clayton Johnson who wrote Logan's Run (not Logan's namesake incidentally) and he informed me that Ted Turner now owns the rights too and that Joel Silver is maybe remaking it.

I also sat in on panel by Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator, Joss Whedon. Here's a video snipet.

It was as big and geeky and as I remember. Just how I likes it.

Beach life (cont'd)

You know what the absolute worst thing about living as close to the beach as I do now is?

Working.

Okay I work at home in fun filled/creative/loving environment. Except all I want do is go to the beach.

Got to beach + No work = No pay rent. Outcome: homeless/hungry (go to beach more?)

Philosophical Faith?

Battleground GOD

and

The TMP Religion Portal

Via Mark

I had a long conversation with my brother yesterday about religion and belief systems. I've always been fascinated by organized religion. The study of it. The history of it. The fact of it, really. In particular things like the Dead Sea Scrolls boggle my mind.

Personally I've always had an undeniable faith that there is something greater than myself. Mary Belle said the other day that she feels closest to God when she is in the ocean. I would have to agree.

Beach life

So we've been here eight days and we've gone boogie boarding 7 times and been to the beach 9 times. It's early and I'm pretty sure those stats will change today.

My brother came down a few days after we arrived. He kept saying that the water was so clean in Laguna.

It's funny because the beach ratings are based on fecal content. So while the water at Oak Street is very clean, the water at Doheny is full of crap. Aliso Creek empties into the harbor apparently.

The really interesting thing is that Venice consistently scores a good rating. No shit (I guess). Just used condoms and syringes. Oh well- surfs up and the water is rocking here in the OC.

Dalai Lama

Pretty difficult to argue with his logic.
This is what The Dalai Lama has to say on the
millennium, which began 01/01/2003. All it takes
is a few seconds to read and think about.

Instructions for Life in the new millennium from the Dalai Lama:

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three Rs: Respect for self, respect for others and responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go some place you've never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

19. approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Uh-- I would add go to the beach at least once a day. That's what I try to do any way.

Independence Day

Spent the entire afternoon at the beach yesterday. Surfing and eating fish Tacos.

Then we took Zoë to her first dog park. It was no Prospect Park obviously, but it worked.

It's so good to be the hell out of Las Vegas. In fact, I think I'm just not going to cop to ever living in Vegas from this point on. When people ask where I was the last two years? -- I'm going to say, uh I dunno ...France or sumthin'.

After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more
hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of
the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I
have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes
responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet
ended.

Death Valley

Monday:
We spent the entire day cleaning the house in Las Vegas. Which, as fun as that can be- it wasn't.

We drove out to Jean NV, and with the idea that we would catch some "Z's" and head out early thereby avoiding the heat in Death Valley because the damn U-haul we rented had no air conditioning.

Much to our surprise Death Valley was stupid hot at six in the morning too. But we got here. Still unpacking and marveling at the fact that there is moisture everywhere.
