Everybody out of the water!

There was a fatal shark attack in Avila Beach yesterday.

We live a long way from Avila Beach and boy howdy are we glad! Although after watching a few of the Shark Week shows on Discovery last week I have some new fear and respect for these crazy critters.

Fatal shark attacks are very rare. I've heard numbers like 6 million to 1 bandied about. Supposedly the odds are much better that you will die in a car wreck, fall down the stairs, or get hit by lightening before getting killed by a shark in the United States.

In California there have been nine confirmed fatalities since record-keeping began in the 1950s, and 106 incidents - fatal and nonfatal - along the entire West Coast in all that time.

I'm guessing those kind of stats will keep us in the water.
