MPFree?

So I'm watching the news last night and they have a story about how record companies are going to start thwarting the piracy of music by developing software that sabotages people's PCs when they download MP3's from peer-2-peer sites like KaZaA and Morpheus.

They even went so far as to post messages on these networks with the text "When you break the law, you risk legal penalties," it read. "There is a simple way to avoid that risk: Don't Steal Music.".

Okay, I'm hip to the fact that pirating music is wrong, but is that really necessary? Don't the record companies have enough money? Do they really want to take away the rebel thrill of music piracy?

Also my guess is that the geeks that like their piracy "as is" are not going to sit still for this. That could lead to all kinds of retaliatory hacking and possibly a New Kids on the Block reunion. A big fear for a lot of us that were Mods in the eighties.

Not to mention the fact that Mr. Jobs has made all of this legal as as hell anyway.

I just find it really annoying that capitalism has replaced the high art of piracy. Arggh matey!
